I'm grateful for the large cotton- tail rabbit nibbling the grass in our backyard at dawn and dusk. I've even learned to appreciate the loud call of the cardinal that wakes me from my slumber too early every morning. I'm grateful for the skittish moth- er chickadee that resides in my bird- house. All day long, she follows the same pattern. With food for her babies in her beak, she'll land on the main railing of my back deck. She'll glance around warily before hopping over to the side railing, scanning the area again, and finally darting inside her home. She reappears seconds later to repeat this manoeuvre again and again. If you can, as soon as you can, I encourage you to take time to really observe the world around you. Equally as important, take the time to observe your inner self. ••• A freelance writer, blogger and communications consultant based in Waterloo, Penny Walford can be reached at penny.walford@hotmail.com. Reconnecting with the world The University of Waterloo Weather Station said the see-saw monthly temperatures continued in May with much cooler tempera- tures than the warmth the Region of Waterloo saw in April. With a very cold start to the month and only a couple days above 25°C, the final overall temperature was 0.6 degrees below average mak- ing it the coldest May since 2009. But the bigger story was that it just wouldn't stop raining. It did for a week but that didn't seem to matter to the overall total. The total precipitation of 146.2 mm was much more than the aver- age of 82.3 m for May. While it might seem like a lot, it wasn't even in the top five for the history of measure- ments made in the region. However, the total for April and May of 270.6 mm was the third high- est of all time and not that much behind the record of 286.0 mm back in 1916. While the total so far for the year of 540 mm is not only well above the average of 340 mm, but is also just below the record wettest first five months of the year at 541.6 mm in 2011. e highest temperature recorded this past May was 28.4°C The lowest minimum tempera- ture was -0.7°C The average daily high tempera- ture was 16.7°C, while the long term average for may is 18.5°C. The average daily low tempera- ture was 7.0°C, while the long term average for May is 6.4°C. e long term averages are based on 1981-2010 data for the Waterloo- Wellington Airport.
