WATER CONSERVATION BY-LAW STARTS MAY 31 This will probably be one of the strangest col-umns I have churned out in years based on the two topics I am about to talk about, but here goes. a few weeks back I had the opportunity to attend the media day for the Manulife LPGa Classic, which runs next week from June 8 to 11 at the Whistle Bear Golf Club, just outside the western edge of Cam- bridge. Cronk colleague Brian Totzke and I teamed up for a special three-hole scramble event and he has aptly covered our heroics and stunning play in an earlier column. OK, maybe not so heroic and stun- ning, but it was fun. What Brian didn't know was how that 45-minute session of playing with defending Manulife champi- on Caroline Masson and Jennifer Kirby has affected my game since that day, not to mention the joy of teeing it up with Masson who is from Germany and Kirby who is from Paris. Of course that Paris is in Ontario but it does have a nice international ring to it. If you've been reading this drivel of mine for any length of time, you'll know I have long suggested that all golfers -- male and female, young and old -- will learn more from watching the women than they will from trying to emulate how the male pros swing. Well guess what? since that Monday afternoon, my "hit and chase" buddies have been shocked at how my game has improved. I haven't added much distance but my shots, especially off the tee, have been remarkably straight. Or as one of my regular cronies scot likes to say, "Boring." I've already won a prize for the Mens League at the Waterloo Golf academy, so can a Blue suede jacket be far behind? I would have said Green jacket but augusta national might have launched a legal move. Of course, I'm writing about this with the full awareness that this scribbling could be the kiss if death for my recent improvement. But long ago I came to the realization that whatever will be, will be, as it relates to my golf prowess. Let's see what hap- pens the rest of the season. For more info about next week's fun at the Bear, contact www.manulifeclassic.ca. Just an added note, kids 17 and under get in free. ••• Bill "Skip" Johns is a retired sportswriter and can be reached at skipschips@golden.net. Continued from page 21 It's the place we brag about. It's the place we're happy to return to after being away. It's the place we call home. don't get me wrong. I understand that times are changing, particularly in the world of media, and that businesses are in business to make a profit. It's part of what makes our economic sys- tem work and our country great. I get that -- I do. But what hasn't changed and never will is that deep down, everyone wants to be part of something bigger than themselves. something a little more meaningful. something a little more special. something like … wait for it … a community. We may differ and debate about how to orga- nize it, how to achieve it or how to pay for it but a community of people who share and care is ultimately what makes this region great. so keep on weaving, K-W. Keep on weaving. Women's golf tips improve my game Sports all work for a common cause
