The City of Waterloo is acquiring the properties, abut- ting the small park, at 48/50 (formerly Beam's Bedding) and 46 William st. W. The expanded park will stretch from alexan- dra avenue -- where alexan- dra Park is currently located -- to William street West. "This is a big deal for Water- loo," said Coun. Melissa dur- rell at a finance and strategic planning meeting May 15. "alexandra Park is a tiny, small park in rough shape. The passing of this recom- mendation means investing in the uptown neighbourhood. Everyone will be thrilled." Coun. diane Freeman and Coun. Bob Mavin weren't among those who were thrilled and voted against the pur- chase. "I have a simple answer. I think it's too much money," said Freeman after the vote. The $1.5 million will come from the parkland dedication fund, which developers are required to contribute to when they build in Waterloo. another $200,000 will be withdrawn to demolish the existing 5,000-square-foot warehouse and grade and seed the land. "developers gave us money for parks, so it's important to not squander that," said steven ross, director of legal services at the city, who prepared the staff report. "Expanding the park will also improve the safety of the park." While there have been no incidents there, he said it is closed off right now, with the warehouse along the back, condos along the east side and a detached home along the west side. along with opening up the park, the extension will link alexandra avenue with Wil- liam street West and the city could potentially build a trail between. Mavin raised concerns about the timing of the pur- chase. "What about Waterloo Park? There's things related to Waterloo Park that could use $1.5 million," he said, as the city moves to clean up silver Lake and Laurel Creek. Then there's the uptown public realm strategy staff is currently undertaking to improve and connect uptown's public spaces. "If we're already making planning decisions before it's done, we're predisposing the results of that," Mavin said. staff is acting now to pur- chase the William street West properties because the price is right, said ross. "The small parcel (46 Wil- liam st. W.) was subject to a recent flood and we wanted to move before the area was improved and became too expensive for us to buy," ross said, noting the city wanted to avoid a tower or other develop- ment being built there. "There's not a lot of options for parks in the urban core." If the purchase is approved at council later this month, the city will start a public con- sultation process to get input into how the park should be designed. City buys land to expand tiny park "I think it's too much money." Coun. Diane Freeman on why she voted against the city buying land
