On Friday, internation- al ly renowned viol inist , Jerzy Kaplanek joins the Dave Young Trio for a spe- cial performance. This show is followed on Saturday by a concert by steel pan man and Denmark resident Rudy Smith and his terrifi c quartet. Kaplanek of the Pend- erecki String quartet, and a fine jazz fiddler, teams up with three of the Jazz Room's favourite players -- Young, Robi Botos and Ethan Ardelli for this May 19 concert. A n i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y renowned violinist, Kapłanek has established himself as a virtuoso chamber musician, and member of the celebrat- ed Penderecki String Quartet. He is also a soloist, dedicated university educator, adjudi- cator and artistic director of QuartetFest. He performs throughout Europe, Asia, and North and South America for more than 80 concerts each season. His album of works by Karol Szymanowski with pianist Stéphan Sylvestre was highly praised by the Strad magazine as "an outstanding release." His discography with the Pen- derecki Quartet comprises more than two dozen CDs on the Marquis, Eclectra, CBC, CMC, EMI labels, including the highly acclaimed record- ing of the complete string quartets of Béla Bartók. Kaplanek has collaborated with such notable musicians as pianists David Braid, Leo- poldo Erice, Vladimir Felts- man, Janina Fialkowska, Francine Kay, Lev Natochen- ny, Jamie Parker, Stéphan Syl- vestre, cellists Marc Johnson, Antonio Lysy, Paul Pulford, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, and clari- netist James Campbell among others. He is frequently heard on CBC Radio and NPR. He has made solo appear- ances with the Kitchener- Waterloo, Hamilton, Peter- borough and CBC Vancou- ver Symphonies and was a featured soloist at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. His jazz show at the Jazz Room features Young on bass, Ethan Ardelli on drums and Robi Botos on piano. In a career spanning six decades, alto steel pan play- er Rudy Smith has built a reputation for exploring and bridging the world of jazz with his native instrument, the steel pan, fi nding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. In the process, he has per- formed and recorded with many jazz musicians and art- ists from almost every corner of the musical world. Born in Port of Spain, Trin- idad, Smith played his first pan at age six, although he is largely self-taught. As a teen- ager he witnessed and heard some of the greatest pan players: Dudley Smith, Evris Barquain, Theo Stephens, Neville Jules, Spree Simon, Ernest Ferreira, Emanuel Jack Riley, Belgrave Bonaparte and Eamon Th orpe. S m i t h p e r f e c t e d h i s unique style by studying jazz luminaries like Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Oscar Peterson and John Coltrane. He has toured interna- tionally and has performed at some of the major clubs and jazz festivals in the U.S.A., Canada, Europe and the Caribbean.
