Kitchener is braving the cold water of Wilson Pool when I was a kid; Waterloo is praising the warm pool of the Rec Com- plex when I took my kids there for swim lessons. Kitchener is a cold beer on a Friday night at the Blue Line Club during a Rangers game; Waterloo is a cold beer on a Saturday afternoon at the sta- dium during Homecoming weekend. Kitchener is rolling five- pin at Towne Bowl with my homies; hitting a jumper from the corner in a hot and hos- tile St. Jerome's gymnasium despite the balcony overhang; and playing men's league hockey at Grand River Arena on a Sunday night. Waterloo is rolling ten-pin downstairs at Town Square with my university buddies; hitting a jumper from the cor- ner in a cool and crazy WCI gymnasium despite the Friday night crowd; and watching my son play Roadbreakers in the parking lot at UW. Kitchener is my dad teach- ing me how to skate at Victoria Park on a cold day in Decem- ber. Waterloo is teaching my sons how to ride a bike at the end of our street on a warm day in May. Kitchener is Moe Nor- man, Court Heinbuch, Scott Stevens, Margot Page, Colin Doyle, Kelly VanderBeek, Bob McKillop, Mandy Bujold, Paul Reinhart, Chelsea Aubry, Tyler Varga, Romel Raffin, Sarah Pavan and Jamaal Murray. Waterloo is Tuffy Knight, Victor Davis, Dana Ellis, Bill Goldsworthy, Rich Lebel, Rod Dean, Garrett Rank, Sean Van Koughnett, Don McKee, Andrew Poje, Mano Watsa, Alec Elliot, Emily Brown and Eric Calder. Don McRae and Mike Moser are both. Kitchener is the Rangers winning the Memorial Cup in 1982 and 2003; Gary Cowan winning the U.S. Amateur in 1966 and 1971; and Lennox Lewis as the last undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Waterloo is the Golden Hawks winning the Vanier Cup in 1991 and 2005; the Siskins winning the Sutherland Cup eleven times between 1940 and 1994; and Phil Goggins hitting a clutch bucket to win the War- riors a national title. If asked my preference, I simply cannot choose. Just as two sergeants fought for con- trol of Chris's soul in Platoon, Kitchener and Waterloo are forever a part of me. Luckily the Twin Cities share a brotherly love and mutual respect not exhibited by Elias and Barnes in that film. Both cities have so much to be proud of, sports and other- wise, and so much shared his- tory, it's hard to imagine one without the other. You can almost visualize Mayors Berry Vrbanovic and Dave Jaworsky looking each other in the eye and simultane- ously proclaiming: "You com- plete me." ••• Brian Totzke is a freelance writer who frequents the movie theatres of Kitchener while maintaining his membership at Princess Cinemas in Waterloo.
