THURSDAY, APRIL 27, 2017 • WATERLOO CHRONICLE • 23 ARTS FOCUS e Grand River Jazz Soci- ety presents wonderful local singer Derek Hines and the On Topic Trio bringing their pro- gressive, Je Beck-in uenced jazz to the Jazz Room this weekend. Local singer and chef Hines brings an amazing band to his yearly Jazz Room show at the historic Huether Hotel. He sings jazz as it should be sung, with skill and emotion. Years of touring have honed Hines' art to a fine edge. For this show, he has assembled an all-star cast of musicians including Adrien Farrugia on piano, Reg Schwa- ger on guitar, Pat Collins on bass and Ted Warren on drums. On Saturday evening, the On Topic Trio makes its first visit to the Jazz Room. On Topic is a perfect mixture of the maturity that comes from experience and the fire of youth. Drummer Aubrey Dayle has joined forces with guitarist Kim Ratcli e and bassist Brad Cheeseman. They have all performed with other artists before deciding to join forces. Dayle has played with Ver- non Reid, John Popper, James 'Blood' Ulmer and David Mur- ray. Ratcli e has played with Ron Sexsmith and David Clay- ton Tomas while Cheeseman has performed with Nancy Walker and Terry Clarke. They've come together to some truly expressive jazz fusion. In short; if you like the music of Jeff Beck, John Sco- field or Mike Stern you will love On Topic. Their music will caress you with heartfelt melodies, and grooves that will hit you in your gut with pinpoint accuracy. e Grand River Jazz Soci- ety is an all volunteer organi- zation. SUBMITTED PHOTO All jazzed up by special performers visiting the Jazz Room this weekend The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony hosts the annual Orchestras Canada Confer- ence at the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts in Down- town Kitchener this week. The conference, which brings together delegates from orchestras across Canada, will take place in downtown Kitch- ener from April 28-30, with an additional "Digital Day" on April 27 that will provide delegates with guided tours of Waterloo Region's hottest tech spots. "It is a great honour for Kitchener-Waterloo Sympho- ny to be hosting the annual Orchestras Canada confer- ence, for the rst time in many years taking place outside one of the largest cities," said Andrew Bennett, KWS Execu- tive Director. "We look forward to wel- coming delegates from across the country, and sharing with them our great music-making and the wealth of the Sym- phony's partnerships with our community." Orchestras Canada is a national organization that works to provide a united voice for orchestras and pro- vide resources to help Cana- dian orchestras thrive. Before the formal begin- ning of the conference, del- egates will visit Communi- tech, The Accelerator Centre, Google and Felt Labs, to learn more about start-up thinking and digital entrepreneurship in relation to the performing arts experience. This year's conference includes a keynote address focused on Deloitte's 'Age of Disruption' study and a ses- sion hosted by KWS Music Director Edwin Outwater that discusses the lasting impact of unusual artistic collabora- tions. Additional sessions focus on equity in the arts, commu- nity and audience building strategies, subscription strate- gies, and others. Outwater's nal Pops con- cert as Music Director of the KWS is May 5-6. is night of music and comedy will feature the return of special guests soprano Measha Bruegger- gosman and pianist Stewart Goodyear like you've never seen them before.
