King street will be recon- structed from Elgin street to the ion tracks just south of Erb street, totalling 650 metres. a section of Erb street will also undergo work from King street to Caroline street, totalling 200 metres. The goals are to replace deteriorating infrastruc- ture, add active transporta- tion enhancements and link uptown with residential areas, Wilfrid laurier university and university of Waterloo. it will include segregated bike lanes and extended sidewalks for patios and other outdoor ame- nities. "One of the most difficult things for uptown businesses (during the lrT construction) was seeing so many construc- tion vehicles idle along that long route," said Coun. Melissa durrell at a committee meeting april 10. "how can we ensure work is being done every single day moving forward?" staff said the construction company is prepared to work extra hours and will complete the project block-by-block, meaning only one section of King street will be closed at a time. The area is also smaller than the one that underwent lrT construction, so it won't take as long -- hopefully, a sin- gle construction season. after experiencing construc- tion for the past two summers, uptown businesses want this project done as soon as pos- sible, said durrell. "Business owners under- stand what this means for uptown," she said. "how can we ensure they feel as little pain as possible and if things do crop up that we are ready and pre- pared?" staff said the region has one of the best inspectors assigned to the project, and after a num- ber of geotechnical investiga- tions, the city and region are fairly confident of what con- struction crews will be dealing with. if there is a delay, the city will let businesses know through the upTown Waterloo Business improvement area. Waterloo had $5.8 million available for the project, but plans to spend an additional $900,000 because of higher- than-expected tenders. a staff report said it wanted to award the tender this spring, regardless of the cost, so that construction could take place this year. The region is paying the remainder, minus $1 million covered by Waterloo North hydro, rogers and Bell Canada. The project includes replac- ing underground munici- pal services, and roadway and parking spaces, as well as decorative amenity zones, enhanced boulevard hard- scapes, street trees, decorative lighting and more cycling infra- structure.
