With the score 119-117 and the ball in the K-W Titans' hands, it seemed as though the Titans were finally going to do it -- beat the London Light- ning. But instead, the Titans missed not only one, but two attempts to either tie or win during their final possession, leading to the 119-117 final against the 31-5 Lightning. "We just have to finish games. Finishing games is a big thing. You can't miss assign- ments after that certain minute mark," said Flen Whitfield, a mid-season addition to the team. Whitfield has been a steady contributor for the Titans since his arrival. He had a team- leading 28 points in Sunday's loss at The Aud. The Titans were able to keep it close in the first quarter, despite a rough 6-0 start. A quick timeout called by head coach Serge Langis stopped the bleeding and the Titans were able to keep close with London, finishing the first quarter trailing by three at 26-23 in favour of the visitors. Early in the game, the Titans were putting up points by committee, with Adam Blazek tak- ing the team lead through the first 12 minutes at six points. Seven other Titans recorded points to contribute to the 23-point total in the first. On the Lightning side of the ball, Kyle John- son was the big factor with nine points through the first 12 minutes. The game didn't come without its contro- versy, however. At a crucial point in the first half, with the score 34-33 in favour of the Lightning about mid-way through the second quarter, ball car- rier Royce White drove his shoulder into Flen Whitfield under the Titans' basket. Whitfield was subsequently called for the block by referee Christine Vuong, much to the chagrin of the Titans' faithful and bench. The Titans finished up the first half with a field goal from University of Western Ontario legend Greg Morrow, who brought the Titans into the lead for the first time in the game. At the end of the third quarter, the Titans slipped slightly, finishing down 92-86. Through the first three frames, Blazek netted a quiet 19 points, while Flen Whitfield had the team lead at 21. The Titans and Lightning continued battling through the fourth quarter; the Titans the bene- ficiaries of an early departure by the Lightning's White, who fouled out. White finished the night with 17 points, shooting 7-for-13. The Lightning were able to extend the gap later in the fourth quarter, leading by at least six. But the Titans kept battling.
