THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2017 • WATERLOO CHRONICLE • 25 ARTS FOCUS The focus is on trios this weekend at the Jazz Room, as the Grand River Jazz Society presents Jason White's piano trio playing traditional stan- dards Friday followed by the Kite Trio on Saturday. White is an amazing pia- nist. Without a doubt, the expression "something for everyone" applies to this trio in concert. In its third incarna- tion, consisting of Jason White (piano), Paul VanDyk (bass), and Joe Ryan (drums), the trio has found an exciting, intuitive dynamic. They draw extensively on jazz, avant-garde and progres- sive rock, minimalism, and even Friedrich Nietzsche to engage audiences on some- times delicately cerebral, sometimes frenetically visceral romps across genres. In their music, there is something fans of almost any genre can pon- der and pulsate over. Their originals defy con- vention, and their covers of The Bad Plus, Frank Zappa and The Isley Brothers, to name a few, are truly inspired. What started fairly innocu- ously as a gigging outfit for hire has become a creative outlet and musical destination for the trio featuring Ryan on drums, and Van Dyk on elec- tric and acoustic bass. For this show, White prom- ises to stick to standard jazz tunes. it will be fascinating to discover what this very creative trio can do with this music. Saturday marks the return of the Kite Trio to the Jazz Room. Kite has been estab- lishing an alternative path for the modern jazz trio since it was formed by guitarist Eric Couture, drummer Eric Dew and upright bassist Paul Van Dyk in Montreal in 2008. Five years of relentless rehears- ing, composing and touring have created a bold sound that often elicits comparisons to both 70s progressive icons Gentle Giant and to modern day alt-jazz giants The Bad Plus. Each member of Kite is a gripping presence on his instrument, but it's a deter- mination to experiment in the face of jazz tradition and to put it all on the line for the band that makes Kite special. e Grand River Jazz Soci- ety is an all volunteer organi- zation. Volunteers are always welcome to help greet patrons at the door at the historic Huether Hotel. Friday and Saturday concerts start at 8:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.kwjazzroom.com. Artists come in threes this weekend at the Jazz Room Jason White and his trio return to the Jazz Room this Friday followed by the Kite Trio on Saturday. SUBMITTED PHOTO
