With only two games left in the regular sea- son, the Knights, who last won a championship five years ago, have a shot at another -- but they do have some tough competition. The top of that list is the huron heights huskies, the defending champions, as well as the Elmira district secondary school Lancers, who won two years prior. and it just so happens that those two top teams are the only ones to put a tick in the Knights' loss column this season. "We just need to play to their level," said Knights head coach dave Ersman, adding that his team did that against the Lancers the last time they met, but only during the third period. "It's about coming out with that intensity. That was the best period we played all season. We just need to do that for 60 minutes." Part of the reason behind the team's success, said Ersman, is Grade 10 goalie Taylor Burton. "she's kept us in games so far this year, and especially as a Grade 10 on this team, that's huge," said Ersman, who has coached the team for five years. amanda Washington, a Grade 12 student who picked up an assist in the Knights' most recent 4-1 romp over the Jacob hespeler hawks last Thursday, said part of the reason for the success of the team is being able to mix all the different abilities. In girls' hockey especially, high school teams are often made of a mish-mash of dif- ferent abilities -- from Provincial Women's hockey League-level to houseleague. "We get along really well and we all have a strong base. We're all different abilities, but we're a very hard-working team," said Washington, who plays midget 'a' outside of school. "It is different because you get used to play- ing a high level of hockey, but you also get used to playing with these girls, too." "When we do play them, we're going to have to play them just like that third period and get pumped up and have a good warm up," said Washington. That game against Elmira, which ended in a 4-2 result with the Lancers' empty net goal, was a close one despite the score. Washington believes that will give the girls some extra confidence if and when they face them again. The Knights take to the ice again on Feb. 13 against southwood secondary school. Their Waterloo County secondary schools athletics association regular season wraps up with a game against Waterloo-Oxford district secondary school on Feb. 15. Meghan Anton of the Bluevale Knights takes a shot on net against the Jacob Hespeler Hawks at Hespeler Memorial Arena on Thursday last week. The Knights are hoping to up their game as they head into the playoffs. AdAM JAcKson pHoTo
