THURSDAY, JANUARY 12, 2017 • WATERLOO CHRONICLE • 21 SPORTS WATERLOO CHRONICLE Stu ed K-W Titans shut down White, Lightning to earn rst home victory By Adam Jackson Chronicle Sta It certainly didn't look good at the begin-ning. The K-W Titans nearly blew home court advantage, going down 11-1 early in the rst quarter in the second half of their home-and-home series against the London Lightning. But they were able to squeeze out a 126-116 overtime win to even the season series at 1-1. The Titans lost game one of the back-to- back on Saturday night 113-109 in London. Former NBA rst-round pick Royce White tried to make it a clean sweep for London. e 2012 16th overall pick of the Houston Rock- ets, who plays centre for the Lightning, fin- ished the game with his second triple-double in two days, with 30 points, 10 assists and 14 rebounds. But his e ort wasn't enough to pro- pel the defending conference champs in Sun- day's game. On the Titans' side, it was a more balanced attack. Three players -- Orlando Coleman, Ricky Tarrant and A.J. Davis -- combined for 57 total points with 19 apiece. After a forgettable rst quarter, where the Lightning took a 26-17 lead, the Titans were able to outscore London 32-21 in the second. After a back-and-forth second half, the teams found themselves knotted at 106 after regula- tion, thanks in large part to a Jamell Harris three-pointer with 30 seconds left in the game to tie it up. Once the game went into overtime, it was all Titans, as they out scored London 20-10 in the ve minutes extra frame. e team was also able to address an issue that has plagued them since the season started -- turnovers. After a home opener that includ- ed an astounding 32 turnovers, the Titans were able to cut that number to 13. According to Tarrant, who added eight rebounds and four assists to his 19 point total, it's only going to improve as the team works on their chemistry. "It's all about getting to know each other," said Tarrant. "That game where we had 32 turnovers we were trying a little too hard to make things happen." e Titans' win marks the third loss for the Lightning, bringing their record to 4-3. For Titans general manager Stu Julius, it was also his rst win against his son, Kyle Julius, who is the head coach of the Lightning. e Titans' record is now 2-2. "It was a good win. We played them close in the exhibition game and (Saturday) … the guys in the locker room, we were focused," said Tar- rant. "We got o to a slow start, but we did a good job of continuing to ght." e Titans were again without Paul Cooper, nicknamed Big Coop, who has yet to see time on the court due to a lower body injury. e 6-foot-9, 250-lb centre would have matched up head-to-head with 6-foot-8 White, and the Titans have missed his presence on the inside. A c c o r d i n g t o T i t a n s h e a d c o a c h Serge Langis, there is no rush to hurry him back into the lineup. "I give credit to Jamell (Harris), Cavell (Johnson) and Greg (Morrow), those guys who are just battling out there even though it's not their natural position," said Tarrant on his team's ability to cover for their big man. Langis was pleased with what he saw from his team. "This particular game here, we took care of the ball," said Langis. " at's just playing, practicing and drilling." e former Moncton Miracles head coach also said his team got a little too complacent at times. "I learned that if they get too comfortable with the way things are, they don't perform," said Lagis. "It has to do with approach to com- petition. "This is a no joke league and there's no cakewalk and there are no easy games." e Titans hosted the Windsor Express on Tuesday evening, but results weren't available by press time. Cavell Johnson, left, the NBL leader in blocked shots, blocks the shot of London Lightning centre Royce White during a 126-116 overtime win at The Aud on Sunday. With the win, the Titans brought their record to 2-2. The Titans hosted the WIndsor Express on Tuesday, but results were not available by press time. ADAM JACKSON PHOTO
