B. 1861 D. 1925
Married - Magdalena (Lena) Kuntz

Aloyes was the son of Karl Joseph Bauer who had emigrated from Germany to Waterloo about 1855. Aloyes followed his father’s trade of carpentry and in the early 1880s built many Waterloo homes and various industrial buildings of that era. When Waterloo established Westside (later Waterloo) Park in 1895, he was responsible for the construction of the grandstand. In 1885 he married Magdalena (Lena) Kuntz whose father David Kuntz Sr. had established the Kuntz Spring Brewery at King and William Sts. Louis Kuntz, Aloyes’ brother-in-law, later became the brewery owner but died suddenly in 1891. Frank Bauer, Aloyes’ brother, took over the management but he too died unexpectedly in 1896. Then Aloyes took over the responsibility, a position he retained until his death. In 1888, Aloyes purchased 2 ½ acres of land at King and Allen Sts. From his father-in-law David Kuntz. Here he began a factory, commonly called the Shoddy Mills, which made cotton felt and batts for mattresses, upholstery and buggy cushions. At first the company was legally called A. Bauer & Co. and then in 1911 was incorporated as Bauer’s Ltd. When automobiles made their appearance c 1920, the factory produced padding for car seats and cushions. By the time of Aloyes’ death in 1925, several additions had been added to the plant.
