Billy Weichel, as he was familiarly called, was born in Elmira where the family conducted a hardware store. After getting his education in Elmira Public School and Berlin High School, he began clerking in the Elmira store. In 1896 the father, Michael Weichel, purchased the J.W. Fear and Co. Hardware on King St S in Waterloo. It was called the M. Weichel and Sons Hardware and William became the manager. Eventually he became the owner calling the business Weichel Hardware. William became interested in politics and particularly in the Conservative Party. In 1911 he defeated William Lyon Mackenzie King but was unseated by the Liberals in the next election. He returned to local politics then he was elected Mayor of Waterloo in 1922-23. In 1923 he switched his interest to provincial politics when was elected Conservative MPP for Waterloo riding. He retired from the political arena in 1934.
