Levi Stauffer was the grandson of pioneer Abraham Stauffer who had come from Pennsylvania in 1805 and purchased Lot #22 G.C.T. (across from Beechwood Plaza today). Levi inherited the farm from his father Joseph. But he became interested in the idea of a new mutual fire insurance company. In 1872, he had a significant role in the formation of the North Waterloo Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Company. In 1874 he became the President and manager of the company and continued in that position for 33 years until his death in 1909. His son Josiah succeeded his father as manager of this company. In 1901 Levi moved into Waterloo buying the large brick home of Julius Germann on George St. He was a most prominent member of the early United Brethren Church.
