B.: 1873 D: 1942
Married: Elma Snider

Herbert Snyder was the eldest son of Simon Snyder. He worked for his Dad in the Snyder-Roos Furniture Co. in the Devitt-Snider Block. When his Dad and others formed the Canada Furniture Company in 1900, he worked there too in the office. After his father Simon died in 1902, he had a disagreement with the management of Canada Furniture and decided to go out on his own. With the help of brothers Alfred and Clayton, he established the Snyder Furniture Company in the Devitt Snider Block but then, needing more space, moved into part of the old woolen mills. The company kept expanding, finally occupying all of the woolen mills space as well as the J.B. Snider Furniture Factory to the South. In 1905, Snyder had architect and builder Charles Moogk construct a large Edwardian style home on Albert St just N of the new Carnegie Library. Moogk used a new construction technique in which the outer walls were made of concrete, the first of this type to be built in Waterloo. When the house was finished, Herbert and new wife Elma Snider moved in. In 1928 Snyder bought a large estate in the Chicopee area of Kitchener and his Waterloo home was purchased by Edward Seagram and given to his son Frowde Seagram and new wife Marjorie as a wedding present.
