The Shantz family owned a 200 acre farm that stretched from the Grand River Railway yards (earlier Young Brickyard) to Dunbar Ave on the south side of Erb St. W. In the early 1900s the farm was owned by Cleason Shantz. The laneway into the farm buildings became Shantz Ave. Cleason sold part of his farm to Charles Mueller who built a new factory for making barrels. He also sold another large acreage to Ed Seagram who built the Globe Furniture Factory further north on Shantz Ave. In the early 1900s Cleason also teamed up with Levi Greybill to operate a retail coal and wood depot where the Young Brickyard had been opposite Caroline St. on the south side of Erb St. E. Shantz Ave. later became Canbar St.
