- Description
- This is a collection of poems written by Dr. William Fischer. The dated poems range from 1892-1902. In October 1903, the poems were compiled into a scrapbook and sent to Sister Liobina Dietrich, who was his teacher at St. Louis Catholic School in 1890-1893. In 1907, Sister Liobina started St. Anne's Convent School (now St. Mary's High School) where she was the principal until 1927.
Most of the poems are handwritten, but a few have been typed on a typewriter. The poems cover a variety of topics, including religious themes, seasonal themes and elegies written for priests that have passed away. The scrapbook also includes newspaper clippings of Dr. Fischer's published poems.
Dr. William J. Fischer returned to Waterloo in 1904 from his medical studies in London, Ontario. In addition to writing, he practiced medicine in Kitchener and Waterloo until his death from cancer, in 1920. He was married to Caroline Kuntz, daughter of brewery owner Louis Kuntz. In 1918, he was appointed medical director for the Mutual Life Assurance Company.
See associated records for the letter that accompanied the poems and the second manuscript. - Notes
