B. 1826 D. 1901
Married: Catherine Weber, Mary Hoffman

John Shuh began his business career in Bridgeport where he apprenticed as a shoemaker. In 1857 when John Hoffman and Isaac Weaver opened a store in newly-completed Commercial Block in Waterloo, John Shuh came to work for them as a clerk. Gradually, he took more responsibility and finally purchased the business. The store was known as John Shuh and Company and was a general store of the type quite common in those days – selling almost anything a person would need. John Shuh became interested in the insurance industry and in 1863 was involved in the formation of the Waterloo County Mutual Fire Ins Co and became its first Treasurer. John’s son Levi had been working for his Dad and gradually took over ownership. He also took on a partner J.B. Snider and the store became known as Shuh and Snider. They sold the business in 1891. John Shuh was President of the Waterloo Woollen Mills. He built a large home on Willow St.
