B. 1808 D. 1908?
Married: Maria _____

In the early history of Waterloo members of the Schnarr family were influential pioneers. By the early 1850s Balthaser Schnarr had built a small hotel on the north-east corner of King and Duke Sts., calling it the Swan Hotel .Balthaser also opened a store on the opposite corner. In 1856 the hotel was sold to Henry Stauffer but the deal fell through. Hartmann Schnarr, a son of Balthaser and previously a weaver by trade, took over the responsibilities for both store and the Albion Hotel as now named. The 1861 Tremaine Map indicates that Hartmann is still the owner of these premises. But in 1864 the management of the establishment is in the hands of John Roos who had recently married Hartmann’s daughter Catherine. About this time in 1860 Schnarr, along with Joachim Kalbfleisch purchased the German language newspaper Die Canadische Bauerenfreund from Moses Springer but Schnarr soon sold his part of the business to Kalbfleisch.
