Cyrus Schiedel was born in Breslau in 1862. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed in the Moses Mayer General Store in that village. Four years later in 1882 he was hired as bookkeeper in the Union Mills owned by William Snider and acted as manager when Snider absent. He remained at that position for 31 yrs until 1913 when he left Snider’s employ to become manager and Secretary of the Public Utilities Commission of Waterloo. In 1896 he built a large red brick home on the corner of Albert St N and Bridgeport Rd. He was a strong supporter of the Evangelical Church nearby and his wife Emma played the organ there for many years. Schiedel is credited with getting a $1100 grant from the Carnegie Foundation to install an organ in the new Evangelical Church built in 1905.
