f you missed it the first time, WNEDâ€" ITV's production of Our Town Kitchâ€" ener/Waterloo will have a special public premiere on May 20 at Waterloo collegiate institute. The show, on the PBS affiliate out of Buffalo, asked 20 community volunâ€" teers to come together last fall and explore their city from a grassroots perâ€" spective. When the final product was aired in March, it turned out to be a communityâ€"enhancing project that offered some vignettes and insights into the area that would surprise both longtime residents as well as people new to the area. Our Town gets its public premiere May 20 One of those segments was put together by Benton Leong, a longtime community volunteer who highlighted the work being done around the restoration of Heasley Park. "We all had our own stories to tell about Waterloo," said Leong, about the program. "It was our chance to tell local community stories, and once you weave all these stories together it‘s a By Bos Vrsanac Chronicle Staff very rich fabric that comprises this region. s _"I learned a lot of things about this area that I didn‘t even know." Leong is also behind the premiere, convincing city officials that the proâ€" gram needed a bigger showcase and could become a calling card for the area. "I think once the community sees all these stories finked together they‘ll also see what a rich community we live in," said Leong. "This is a wonderful way of celebrating who we are, while learning who we are." The original plan was to have a red carpet and big flood lights to sort of give the event the feel of a movie preâ€" miere. While the Hollywood trappings won‘t be there for the show that starts at 7 p.m., the audience will get a chance to meet the volunteers who contributed to the project and the proâ€" ducers of the show who are making their way down from Buffalo. "Not everybody had a chance to see it so that‘s what drove me to approach the city about this," said Leong. "Each participant or videographer will introâ€" duce their segment and will introduce the people who were part of that story. "It will also be a chance to thank those who participated and celebrate the show‘s success." One person looking forward to the premiere is Waterloo Mayor Brenda Halloran. While she had an opportuniâ€" ty to see the original broadcast and is a big fan of what it achieved, she also wanted to celebrate the community spirit behind it. "We wanted to recognize the people who participated, the kids who took part in it and make it into a real good community event," said Halloran. "This is a chance to say thanks to the community and look at what we‘ve done." And she invites anybody interested in attending to come out to the twoâ€" hour rebroadcast to get a little better sense of their community. She thinks it paints a wonderful picture of the area. "We want to make sure that everyâ€" body does have a chance to see it and celebrate Waterloo," said Halloran. "It showcases all the great stuff that is happening here."
