embers of city council and MWaterloo’s pesticide bylaw task force are applauding the provincial government‘s move to ban toxic pesticides across Ontario. The municipality has been working on a bylaw to implement its own ban for months, but the province‘s law will have more teeth simply because Queen‘s Park has more power, said Coun. Angela Vieth. The proposed provincial legislation will ban both the use and the sale of cosmetic pesticides. Municipalities don‘t have the power to take those products off the shelf, Vieth said. "What I like about the province‘s proposal is that they can put restricâ€" tions on products. That‘s a huge help because we can‘t do that," she said. There are still questions about the province‘s proposal, such as whether or not municipalities will be able to put in place harsher regulations, Vieth added. Whatever the case, Vieth believes that the province made the right move. "I‘m confident that we will have a strong bylaw," she said. The McGuinty Liberals released their proposal last week, but details are still sketchy, said Denise McGoldrick, environmental project manager for the city. The bylaw task force is currently in contact with the province to clarify a few points and decide what route to take, she added. Some of the details released last week said that the provincial ban will supersede municipal regulations, but the Municipal Act currently gives cities power to institute their own ban. _ "Some of the details are still unclear," Vieth said.
