The murals are the result of a partâ€" nership between the library and the secondâ€"year graphic design class at the college, led by Conestoga instructor and WPL library board member Tom Bishop. Waterloo public library unveils murals In the fall of 2007, Bishop, in conâ€" sultation with WPL‘s manager of public services Lynda Gale, created an assignâ€" ment entitled Alphabet Artwork. That assignment asked students to design a mural using the characters of the alphabet to enliven the wall spaces at the main library. ¢ All of the students in the class preâ€" pared submissions, which were then evaluated by the library as a realâ€"life client presentation. The winning subâ€" missions, by graphic design students Phillip Novak and Amy Rayner, have been transformed into wallâ€"sized murals and are being installed in the adult and children‘s areas of the main library on Albert Street. "This is a wonderful partnership that celebrates art, the alphabet and the collaboration between the library and postâ€"secondary students in our community in support of learning and literacy," said Gale. ";g en "It‘s also a wonderful opportunity to showcase the creative work of the graphic design students in a wellâ€"used and muchâ€"loved public space." The Waterloo public library recently unveiled a series of murals by Conestoga Colâ€" lege students. â€"Tom Bishop Conestoga College instructor and Waterloo public library board member Gale notes that more than 1,600 "It‘s very exciting for both the students and the library." ARTS FOCI people visit the WPL every day. She said that the murals will bring artwork to the attention of library visitors who perhaps wouldn‘t visit a gallery or othâ€" erwise be exposed to this kind of creâ€" ative work. "It‘s very exciting for both the stuâ€" dents and the library," said Bishop. "And this project has certainly given the students practice in preparing for a realâ€"life client." In addition to the artwork that is being installed in the adult and chilâ€" dren‘s areas of the library, the mural submissions by other students in Bishâ€" op‘s class will be on display in the audiâ€" torium at the main library for several weeks after the unveiling.
