or a Cambridge Turbos Frlngetlc team that hadn‘t had any trouble putting rings in the net throughout the season, things looked dire when they met a hot goalie in the national champiâ€" onship game. It took a seasoned local defendâ€" er to keep the team in the game and help them to go on to win the championship. After the Turbos allowed a goal barely five minutes into the first period, the team was in trouble, said Vanessa Cowlen, a Turbos vetâ€" eran who was the only Cambridge player named to the National Ringette League‘s allâ€"star team. The 27â€"yearâ€"old veteran, who has been playing ringette for two decades, knew the team would have to tighten up the "d" in order to get the win. "It was a stressful game," Cowlen said. "We knew to stay in that we‘d have to play really tough defence." The Rocket Ravens finished second in the Jason Cripps Christmas tournament this past Christmas and proudly representâ€" ed Waterloo at an Oakville tournament in February losing in the semifinals on a late TEAM OF THE WEEK But with a staunch defence forcâ€" ing tough shots and keeping the mission on their toes, the Turbos kept the game close. Then in the final two minutes of play, the Turâ€" bos scored two quick goals and won the championship game 2â€"1. And while quick offence might have been the key to the win, it was a tough defence that got the Turbos to that point, Cowlen said. She was pleased with the accoâ€" lades, but winning the champiâ€" onship and being named to the allâ€" star team weren‘t the best parts of the victory. "We had new girls this year who had never been to the nationals before, so it was good to see them win the championship," she said. Being a veteran presence on the team was also a rewarding experiâ€" ence. "I had to explain to them that it is a big deal, but at the same time it‘s just another game. The week is intense but you have to stay focused." Cowlen figures she is nearing the end of her NRL career, but is planning to stay in the sport. ______ "The past few years 1 really feel like I‘ve slowed down," said Cowlen, who works at a chiropracâ€" tic centre in Waterloo. "This year 1 trained really hard to get back into it. But I think I only have a couple of seasons left." She plans to continue to train in the offâ€"season, playing summer ringette in Waterloo. "I just want to keep on the ice," said Cowlen.
