African continent Continued from page 27 Fanshawe is convinced that his use of that model of recording device is why his recordâ€" ings have stood the test of time. "If I had gone with a cassette, it wouldn‘t have stood up. mt s . e His journey to record the sounds of Africa took on a crossâ€"shape as he jourâ€" neyed from the Mediterranean south to Lake Victoria, and then from West Sudan to the Red Sea. Fanshawe maintains that "the Nile chose" the music for the African Sanctus. He had over 500 hours of recordings that needed to be condensed into approximately 40 minutes. He could "hear in his mind" the music that repreâ€" sented the key points of the journey â€" Cairo, Luxor, Sudan, Uganda and Kenya â€" and the sounds "became a documenâ€" tary of where I‘d been." He started with the African music and composed and blended the accomâ€" panying Latin mass to compliment the indigenous music. Very few of the African people feaâ€" tured in the African Sanctus have actualâ€" ly heard the work. Fanshawe tried to reâ€" trace his path to create the African Sancâ€" tus with a film crew from the BBC, and was unable to find many of the tribes. For example, a halfâ€"million members of the Acholi people of Northern Uganâ€" da, the most musical people that Fanâ€" shawe encountered, whose music was the source and inspiration for the Sancâ€" tus and Crucifixus sections of the African Sanctus, were murdered in 1971 under the reign of terror of Idi Amin. Performance is combination of indigenous and traditional music In order to record the Bwala dance in the Sanctus section, Fanshawe stood in the middle of a circle, and the tribespeoâ€" ple danced around him. The dance has never been recorded since, and he has never been able to return to Uganda. The man that sang the Rain Song was among those murdered, and every time Fanshawe hears the African Sanctus he remembers the musicians who were murdered, and "it moves me every time L hear it." The Hippo Man, the Luo tribal elder from Kenya who sings in the African Sanctus is one of the few to have heard the complete work. He was a friend of the grandfather of Barack Obama, the politician currently trying to become the Democratic candidate for president of the United States. Fanshawe suspects that Obama and the Hippo Man are disâ€" tant relations since Obama‘s father was a Luo tribesman as well. As a "composer and explorer of World Music," Fanshawe hopes that an audience member listening to the work will listen to the whole â€" the "one music." "I like to feel that I‘ve composed a piece of music and the audience needs to listen to the whole experience of the tapes plus the live music." In many cases, his recordings are the only surviving cultural evidence of the tribes that have since disappeared or been eradicated. It is a constant reminder to him of what has been lost in the 30 years since the work was created. While Fanshawe "revels in all the bits" of the African Sanctus, he feels the sheer excitement of the Sanctus section with the Acholi welcome dance and the choral part makes it one of the more dramatic parts of the work. In addition, Fanshawe often attends the performances of the African Sancâ€" tus, and speaks with the choir beforeâ€" hand so that they understand the "pain behind the work." He feels strongly that the work cannot be performed accuâ€" rately unless the choir has a good understanding of the story behind the indigenous muysic selections.
