The city can‘t choose what sort of developments build in an area, only which zoning bylaws they have to adhere to. Waterloo already has a 23â€"year supâ€" ply of student housing, with most of it concentrated on main corridors, she If they extended the zoning for higher density inside the Kingâ€"Universityâ€" But allowing a higher density in the area wouldn‘t necessarily bring diversity â€" it might just bring more student housing, said Krista Walkey, policy planâ€" ner for the city. That would mean more people, but it would also mean better living environâ€" ments for students and families alike, Munson said. The main request from residents was to "upâ€"zone" the area to allow more denâ€" sity and create a more diverse neighâ€" bourhood. There were many suggestions of what to do with the neighbourhood, including encouraging technology workers to move into the community, publicizing the area as friendly to all walks of life instead of just students and requiring students to take written tests to show they know the bylaws. But the time to try and drive students out and restore a familyâ€"based commuâ€" nity has passed, said Ken Munson, another Albert Street resident. "The same residents who loved the area (as it was a decade ago) realize they can‘t turn back the clock," he said. Michael Carmody, who lives on Albert Street, worried that if the area isn‘t developed soon, it would degenerate into a student ghetto like those seen in other university cities in Ontario. "Families are not moving into the neighbourhood. The Kingstonâ€"style ghetto we‘ve all worked so hard to preâ€" vent is being created," Carmody said, referencing the housing around Queen‘s University in Kingston, Ont. council to be visionaries and reshape the neighbourhood for the benefit of all," he said. That was the theme from many of the nine residents from affected neighbourhoods who spoke to council about the problems they face. Many residents complained about poorly kept student dwellings, illegal boarding houses and absentee landlords. m Continued from page 1 NOW IN Kâ€"W AREA CALL NOW FOR A FREE CONSULTATION 55 King Street West, Suite 716 Are you looking for a change in your career?
