The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men‘s and women‘s curling teams both brought home gold from the inaugural Canadian university championships held last weekend in Guelph. Wilfrid Laurier University‘s women‘s curlâ€" ing team struck gold at the first ever Canadiâ€" an University Curling Championships defeating Manitoba 7â€"4 in 10 ends of play Sunday in Guelph. Earlier in the day, the team defeated Lauâ€" rentian in the semifinal 9â€"3 in eight ends. It was a great run for the team that faced elimination Saturday before making it to the playoffs by winning the tiebreaker game. The win earned the team, which trains out of Waterloo‘s Granite Club, the right to represent Canada at the Winter Universiade (University Games) in Harbin, China, in February of 2009. The international games, second in size to the Olympics, has only had curling compete at the event once before. The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawk men‘s curling team claimed the first ever CIS/CCA Canadian University Curling Championship after a dominating weekend of play which ended with a 9â€"4 win over Calgary Sunday afternoon at the Guelph Curling Club. Men‘s team dominates finals "It‘s amazing with the calibre of teams coming into the championship, including the highly regarded University of Calgary, who we beat twice. It‘s just an incredible feeling," said skip Mike Anderson, who was later named to the allâ€"Canadian team. Also named to the allâ€"Canadian team was second Paul Arkilander. The Guelph Curling Club was basically home ice for the skip, and he took advantage of his intimate knowledge of the ice surface. "It was great to win the championship in such a familiar place to me," said Anderson. "This is my favourite rink in Ontario."
