ostâ€"secondary students make up a Psignificunl portion of Waterloo‘s poputation, but most are not in touch with community issues. On the flip side, municipal and regional governments are often out of touch with student needs and more concerned with the effects of university and college populations than the stuâ€" dents themselves. That‘s the problem the Mayor Stuâ€" dent Advisory Council hopes to address. MSAC is a group of local uniâ€" versity students that is aiming to get more involved in the city and the city more involved with students, said Mavor Brenda Halloran. Part of Halloran‘s campaign during the 2006 municipal election was based on reaching out to students and addressing their concerns. New group connects city to students "When I was running for mayor I thought it was important for students to be a part of this community," Halloâ€" ran said. "I didn‘t see a voice for them." One local student, Chelsea Prescod, was supportive of Halloran‘s campaign and the two talked about how to give students a platform in the city. Prescod had been a member of Misâ€" sissauga Mayor Hazel McCallion‘s youth council before she came to Waterloo and thought that model might fit here. "I thought we should bring that idea to Waterloo and see what it could do for the undergrads in this city," said Prescod, a fifthâ€"year student at the Uniâ€" versity of Watetloo. The first meeting was mostly a proâ€" cedural and organizational affair, but some big ideas came out of it, Prescod said. "We just met with members for the first time and presented ideas about what each of us can do in the commuâ€" nity," she said. "We want to encourage students to volunteer, discuss public policy and become a real part of Waterloo," said Prescod. ~ Halloran hopes that the group will start initiatives to do good in the comâ€" munity, but also be a body that can relay concerns back and forth between council and students. the Waterloo community, "It‘s a good forum to talk about some of the problems the city and students have, whether it be garbage, housing or incidents after bar closing," she said. Brenda Halloran Mayor of Waterloo But the conversation can‘t be one way, Halloran added. "I don‘t want it to be oneâ€"sided. We want citizens and students on board so we can bring awareness to everyone," she said. Any university or college student can join the group, Prescod said. They are enlisted into a subcommittee that deals with issues like social developâ€" ment, cultural diversity and public poliâ€" _ "Each member has to join a comâ€" mittee and do work," said Anum Tariq, director of community relations for MSAC. They also hope to bring their own issues forward and get them addressed on a regional scale. "Our city is definitely growing but it‘s still a small place where people know each other," Tariq said. â€" "Young students like the downtown life and there‘s not much of that here. They go to school here and look for opportunities elsewhere." "We want to help keep the city growing," Tariq said. "That might mean going out and volunteering or attending council meetings," she added. Tariq also expects that the group will be asked by the mayor for their opinâ€" ions on contentious issues such as pesâ€" ticide use and student housing. One problem that the group hopes to address is the Waterloo brain drain. _ MSAC wants to see students stay in the city and help grow it into,a vibrant, thriving community. ’ "We want to bring new and fresh ideas here." 425 Univerisity Ave. E. 875 Highland RW., _ 725 Ofttawa St. S. 519â€"744â€"7011 519â€"7415111 _ 519â€"741â€"1611 (Bridge & University) (Highland Hills Mail) (in the Alpine Plaza) Look great by spring...
