Goalies Dylan Hartleib and Brad Farmham combined for all four victories allowing only two the entire tourney. The Wolves opened the goals tournament by beating North Toronâ€" to No. 1 7â€"1. They followed that up by beating North Toronto No. 2 8â€"1. The Wolves met undefeated Leaside next and shut them out 4â€"0. The Mountain Wolves faced Leaside again in the finals in a much tighter affair. That‘s the thought that filtered through my commercialâ€" besieged brain Sunday night as the 42nd annual National Footâ€" ball League Super Bow! finished its rather unusual outing. *Only one thing can do more mindâ€"numbing damage than the twoâ€"week prep for our American friends‘ football bash and that‘s the chase for the American presidency. However, unlike the Super Bow!l, the politiâ€" cal bow!l doesn‘t do its final flush until sometime in November. Of course, I could turn off political chinwags on CNN, Fox and the other U.S. television networks but even I can‘t live forever on reruns of Law and Order, Frasier, Will and Grace, etc., but that‘s another story. Make no mistake, I enjoy the National Football League and I have seen all or part of every Super Bowl since the start, from what I remember. Yes, I‘ve been known to have a wee drop or two of liquid refreshments durâ€" ing the game on occasion and then have to had an early nap, not always seeing the finish. Hey, stuff happens. Such was not the case this year, however. Battling a cold and hacking cough, I opted not to visit my favourite neighbourâ€" hood watering hole, Porky Felines, where they were holding a parking lot barbecue and dayâ€" long football party. The place isn‘t really called Porky Felines but the grumpy, hairâ€"challenged owner refuses to give me free drinks so no free plugs. Anyway, comfortably fitted into my favourite recliner and still in my jammies, I watched the Super Bowl with mixed emoâ€" tions. l knew it would be long â€" nearly four hours to complete 60 minutes of football â€" and comâ€" mercial filled. That comes with the territory. However, with the New Eng land Patriots on the 18â€"game winning streak and the New York Giants the darlings of the underâ€" dog set, I was interested. Since I do remember the Miami Dolâ€" phins 17â€"game undefeated seaâ€" son in 1972, I was kind of rooting for the Pats to set a new stanâ€" dard. And I had them to win on a few football pool sheets. But then I also had picked the Giants on a couple of other pool sheets as my longshot team. Hopefully, by the time you‘re reading this, the postâ€"game bull crap has died down. Monday morning I flipped around the earlyâ€"morning news, including Canada AM which is my favourite, only to hear so many of the talking heads proclaim it to be the best game in Super Bore history. Yikes, did they watch the same game I saw? Not unlike many, many massively hyped finals before, the overall game wasn‘t much. [ think it was 3â€"0 Giants at the end of the first quarter, 7â€"3 New England at the half and the same small digits heading into the final quarter. The fact that the two teams scored 10 points in the first three quarters and then 21 in the last 15 minutes tricks people into thinking they‘ve seen a great game. Sure, it might have been a good defensive battle and the finish was exciting, but generally SPORI or call at 519 742 4281 â€" to my way of thinking â€" it was hardly a great game. _ In truth, I missed all of the thirdâ€"quarter when my soonâ€"toâ€" be fiveâ€"yearâ€"old grandson decid ed he and grandpa needed to find all the characters in his The Incredibles Look and Find book The little dude is pretty comâ€" petitive so at times the action with him on the arm of my recliner and us trying to find the various people and items in the book was more fierce than what was happening on the tube. We did that for the entire quarter and as 1 pointed out earlier, I missed no scoring. Yawn. Yes, the final quarter did have some excitement and some drama before the Giants scored the winning touchdown in the final minute of play and the Pats couldn‘t come up with a decent lastâ€"seconds drive to tie the game or regain the lead.. Of course, well before the dramatic finish, probably half of the pigskin fans in the world were already celebrating or moaning since it was now apparent that there was no way the Pats were going to cover the 12â€"point preâ€"game spread. And don‘t forget, gambling is part and parcel of the Super Bowl. And speaking of gambling, yes, I did have a wager on the game, and it was a big one. _ It was a crisp Wilfrid Laurier â€" that‘s a $5 bill for the millions of Canadians who have no idea what famous Canadians grace our paper currency â€" and it was a bet made with my 14â€"yearâ€"old granddaughter, who has a stash of money from babysitting chores. It wasn‘t until after we agreed to the bet that I pointed out to her â€" as any good grandpa would â€" that she should have asked for points, as in the point spread. Since she knows nothing about sports bets, she knew nothing about this and then Continued on page 26
