Thirteen of those RBC Local Hockey Leaders will be recâ€" ognized for their work at the Hockey Hall of Fame on March 6, and a $10,000 donation will be made to the organizaâ€" tions they represent. â€" "She does all those special little touches that the kids love," said Hennig, who ran the recent Ravens Fall Chalâ€" lenge hockey tournament with Abel‘s help. "She goes above and beyond what volunteers do. Volunteer says it‘s about helping local girls Golden girls SUBMITTED PHOTO Abel said it was never about the recognition. It just started off with her supporting her daughter Chelsea‘s hockey dreams. "She does all those little background things, and I‘m not even sure they‘re aware that she‘s doing it." â€" It grew from there to the point where the black and gold colours of the Ravens became her favourite colours. The only thing she doesn‘t own is a Ravens‘ hockey jacket, although she borrows her daughter‘s on occasion. "An interesting thing about volunâ€" teering is that it is addictive because it is so much fun," said Abel, who gives a lot of credit to her family for supporting her. "I often hear people say, ‘You know, that was more fun to do than I thought. Count me in for next year.‘ "One event and you‘re hooked." She admits that she was very surâ€" prised when she was nominated. After all, it was never abouther â€" it was about helping the girls. "I feel very honâ€" oured," said Abel. But every time she‘s asked to help she always finds a way. She often tells people when they want her to take on a new responsibility that she in only "the decorator," but she gives it her best anyâ€" way and has always found it to be rewarding. "I just like to see everybody‘s reacâ€" tion to what we‘ve done," said Abel. "I like to sit back and watch. The limelight really scares me and that‘s what makes me so nervous about this." And she like to do what she can to give more girls a chance to play hockey. "I think there are some very exciting times ahead for girls‘ hockey in Waterâ€" loo, and I would love to win the RBC prize to further those opportunities for our girls," said Abel. "There are lots of hockeyâ€"loving girls out there hindered by limited funds to play to their potenâ€" tial and I would love to help those girls." Not nervous enough to forget to remind everyone that tickets for the Ravens annual celebration go on sale this week.
