Other than that, the Waterloo resident goes about her daily life just as she has for the past 100 years. Maria Mathes is a little bit wobbly on her feet, and uses a ‘cane for balance from time to time. "Nobody lived in the family so long like me," said Maria, who was raised in a small village in Transylvania called Moenchsdorf. The couple had two daughters, Maria and Katharine. In 1944, with the Second Guelph Infiniti World War drawing to a close and the front moving closer to their village, the Mathes, a family of German decent, were told to pack up and leave. With only the belongings they could fit in a covered wagon, the family headed for Austria, and later to Canada. They started their life here in Bloomingdale, Ont., where they found work as farmers. Eventually they came to Kitchener, and 35 years ago they settled in a home on Hazel Street in Waterloo. Johann died in 1998, by which time the couple had celebrated their 75th wedâ€" ding anniversary with a big garden party in their home. Maria continues to live there with her daughter, Katharine Stoof, who helps her when needed.
