"It was our first year. At the start we thought we would just gain experience and start to work as a team," Backewich said. "We‘d all come from developed backgrounds but we‘d never played together so we weren‘t expecting much." â€" But after barrelling through the tournament, with only one loss to tamish the record, a championship would cap a strong start for U of G‘s ringette program. _ â€" "We didn‘t get down (after the loss), we were just thankful to get so far," the forward said. "We knew we could beat them if we faced them again. We set our expectations high and believed we‘d see a different result." )ERS And they did. Backewich scored a late goal to give VINNERS the U of G team a 4â€"3 win and the Tierâ€"2 championship at the cup, which was an McCuaig held in Ottawa earlier this month. "It felt so great," she said. "Since I (left Waterloo}, I‘ve been looking for a place to play. I‘ve waited so long to play outâ€" side a league." Now Backewich, who racked up 15 points in the tournament, feels she‘s found a home. "I love being able to play with fellow students. We‘re so close now. After the tournament, we still see each other on campus and talk about what happened," she said. Backewich, who grew up playing rep ringette in Waterloo, said because of school and other commitments she doesn‘t have enough time to play in leagues such as the National Ringette League. ~ "I can‘t see myself giving up that much time, I have a lot of schoolwork. I don‘t know if there will ever be enough time for me to do that," she said. So the U of G club is a good fit, Backâ€" ewich added. It allows her to be part of a team while focusing on school and teaching skating classes, which is her other love. Backewich runs a powerskating school in Guelph and previously taught with BladeOne Powerskating and the Waterloo Ringette Association here at home. "My love is skating first and foreâ€" most," she said. The Region of Waterloo intends to pass an amendment to Byâ€"law 05â€"080 (Establish Fees and Charges). With a number of universities offering ringette teams or club programs, the sport‘s profile is on the rise.
