Local curler set to rock Ontario junior championships Simon Barrick, an 18â€"yearâ€"old highâ€" school student who curts at the Kâ€"W Granite Club in Waterloo, is the skip of a team comâ€" peting at the junior championships in Coldâ€" water, Ont., in early January. t‘s not the Brier, but a local curler is hopâ€" Iing his team‘s performance at the upcomâ€" ing Ontario junior curling championship will set them on the path to someday comâ€" pete in the men‘s national championship. If his team, which is playing out of a club in Coldwater, wins the tournament they move on to the national junior champiâ€" onships. Then next year when they turn 19, they‘ll have the chance to vie for a spot at the Brier. But Barrick isn‘t worrying about that just yet. He‘s keeping his focus on the juniors . "The way it works is 18 teams compete in a round robin and three go into the playoffs. We‘re pretty confident we can get to the playoffs, but after that we‘ll just take it a game at a time," he said. "We can compete." "Ideally I‘d like to someday win the Brier, but first we have to get out of this tournaâ€" ment," Barrick said. _ Barrick‘s team is made up of him as skip, two players from nearby Midland, Ont., and a friend from Brampton, Ont. The team formed after playing against each other for years. "Basically we competed ail the time and decided that we‘d play well together and to make a run at the championship," he said. And even though the team has been together for under a year, coach Salvatore Pace can tell that Barrick will be the anchor for the team. 6)Boston PIzZa Registered trademarks of Boston Pizza Royalties Limeted Partnership, used under license © Boston Pizza International Inc. 2005 The Waterloo Chronicle Team of the Week is the Wiltrid Lauriet Ugiversity Golden Hawks women‘s fastpitch team. He doesn‘t get frazzled under pressure," Pace Pace also admires Barrick‘s quiet play. The coach describes his player‘s style as a draw type. As a skip, Barrick likes to set up guard rocks and slide in his stones in behind them instead of hitting other teams‘ rocks out of the way. "We‘re ranked fifth in Ontario, so it‘s served us well so far. 1 think we have a very good chance to win," he said. That style will help them at the Ontario championships, Pace said. Barrick wants to keep the team together even if they don‘t succeed at the provincial championships. _ "I think we should be favourites to win as long as our heads don‘t get too big." The curler is hoping to stay in the city next year when he moves on to university. His first choice is Wilfrid Laurier University. "I want to stay in town because I think it will help keep the team together. It will be easier to get rides and be more consistent for my game," he said. No matter where he ends up, Barrick doesn‘t plan on giving up curling. â€" â€" "I enjoy the camaraderie of the game. Unlike other sports, you can chat with the other players during the game and joke around. It‘s still competitive, but.it‘s friendly," he said. Barrick‘s ultimate goal is to compete for the Brier and head to the Olympics. _ "This is just the first stage," he said. "But hopefully it will be a good start." &4 2114044454A CA cAAA A Leane afte avaruore an naw 2000 15e eX 7R CPO 2008 NS ihe8G20 AdoPh. 1. 39 LA fora eP snn baughe ane 907 of $ a00€,400 w dn i omne inrmptne.
