local figure skating team is Nits?: to parlay its suc- ess in Canada into inter- national notoriety when they compete in Paris this weekend. Andrew Poje and Kaitlyn Weaver. a 1Wterloo-based skat- ing pair who surprised everyone by nabbing bronze at last year's Canadian figure skating champi- onships. will compete at Le Trophée Eric Bompard in Paris on Saturday and Sunday as part of the figure skating grand prix The competition comes on the heels of a disappointing sixth-place finish at Skate Cam» da in Quebec City earlier this month, but the duo's odds are better this lime around, said Weaver. "Two of our segments at Skate Canada weren't strong, but we came out stronger in the end," she said. She hopes to carry that momentum across the pond. What might make the differ ence in Paris is that the compul- sory dance is an Austrian waltz, a program that is much more suited to the couple than the dance at Skate Canada, which was aYankee Polka. "We're naturally more waltzers I think. The polka is son of quick and mgimented, but the waltz is more lilting and flow- ing," Weaver said. Poje and Weaver have high hopes for Paris, but in the grand scheme of things it's just another stop on the way to the 2010 Olympics. “That's where we want to be," Weaver said. "We want to com- pete in Vancouver and after that just be the best for as long as we can. It's not like our dreams end Skaters ready to take on Paris MGmMmun 7093951111; WATEIIIIIII . But both skaters feel a bond that they haven't had with other partners and think they have something special. “We have a special chemistry that takes most people a long time to develop and we had it right offthe bat," Poje said. The pair first met in 2004 when Weaver and her then part- ner came from Connecticut to practice in Waterloo. She and Poje hit it off and when a couple of years later both were without partners, Weaver made the move to Canada to start a new team. “We mesh together naturally. I think it's our ability to work together that's great. It's not just chemistry, it's that we can deal with each other." "We didn't really have time to celebrate, we had more compe- titions," Poje said of the surprise win. "But we realty went through all the emotions. Now we know what we're capable of." They hope to show the entire world their potential in Paris. And even though two days of practice and two days of compe~ tition will be taxing, Poje and Weaver are still taking some time out for sightseeing. “We're stdying two days after the meet, I've never done that before. lt will be a bit of a vaca- tion," Weaver said. After that, they get back on the path to dominating the seat- ing world.
