This includes addresses and phone numbers, as well as any photos that could reveal the location of the child‘s home, Silva said. Predators could take advantage of online look up services like 411.ca or satellite imagery to find out where the child lives and goes to school. Online predators are persistent, Silva said. Sometimes by posing as a peer or becoming an online friend with a child, predators can learn more about a child than his or her parâ€" ents do, he added. Most of the calls about online sexual solicitation of minors in Waterloo come during the summer months when kids aren‘t at school and have more time unsupervised on comâ€" puters. But even these incidents can often be prevented, Silva "Really the key is just to take an active role and be interestâ€" ed in what the kids are doing online. If parents feel uncomâ€" fortable with the Net or computers, they can get their kids to teach them and show them what they‘re doing," he said. It‘s important for parents to have access to this type of information so that they can ensure their children‘s Internet safety, which is why Lester B. Pearson school decided to hold the event, said Sukhsehj Kaur, the chair of the school council‘s community spirit committee and the mother of a Grade 4 student. Her daughter is just coming to the age when the Internet is starting to play an integral role in her schooling and social life, Kaur said. 4 "The Internet is part of a child‘s reality now and we can‘t sequester them from it anymore. "(The presenter) goes into a chat room posing as a 12â€"yearâ€"old and within two minutes there are creeps trying to pick them up," she said. "It‘s a real wakeâ€" But sexual predators aren‘t the only things for parents to watch out for online. Over the past couple of years, cyberâ€"bullying has emerged as a new way for children to torment each other. "What used to occur on school grounds is now happening online," Silva Websites deriding or teasing children often pop up and instant messengers are used as a tool for bullies to harass their victims, he added. Schools now have the power to expel or suspend students over Internet harassment, so any cyberâ€"builying should be reported to the proper school authorities, Sitva said.
