Wilmot _ council backs city road plan mot Township has endorsed a City of Waterloo proposal to upgrade the intersection of Wilmot line and Erb Street West. This despite pressure from property owners living along the rural stretch who say the move will erode the integrity of the countryside line and funnel traffic into an adjacent environmentally sensi- tive area. To accommodate the anticipated con- gestion generated by west-side subdivi- sion developments, the city is proposing to realign Wilmot Une 50 metres west of the existing junction. The realignment west of the region's reservoir will prevent the city from spending an estimated $3 million to protect the reservoir if it keeps the intersection where it is now. last week Wilmot recommended sup- port of the city's preferred solution as long as the township retains ownership of Wilmot Line and the remnant parcel between it and the former road allowance. Although it won't pay a cent for the construction, Wilmot wants to see the final design of the realignment, which includes land acquisition from a neighbouring farm property. The town- ship is also demanding an illegal bill- board currently standing at the intersec- tion be removed. The ongoing struggle over the devel- opment of three subdivisions on Water- loo's west side has pitted the city against property owners and environmentalists for more than a decade, Wilmm's support of the intersection upgrade last week clears one more hurdle for the city before a final decision on the developments are handed down from the region. In addition to the intersection realign- ment, Waterloo is proposing to build a Columbia Street extension that would connect to Wilmot Une through a round- about and adjacent intersection designed to deter traffic from travelling north on the gravel road.
