10 + New Waterloo Band Festival a bridge to area‘s musical past Stepping back in time 1'! was a Waterloo tradition that has since passed into the sepiaâ€"toned world of old photos and even older memories. Fading brass instruments and old colourâ€"worn uniforms tell of a time when marching bands and drum and bugle corps were a great source of civic pride. When parades, festivals and band comâ€" petitions brought out the public in droves instead of only representing the faint echoes of the past. But there are still those who remember the Waterloo Band Fesâ€" tival, started by the late Prof. C. E. Thiele in the 1930s, before the local parade fields went silent in the late 1950s. Some of those musical memories were revived in time for Waterloo‘s 150th anniverâ€" sary celebrations earlier this year, but it wasn‘t a true inheritor of that rich martial music past. It recent years the preservation of that history has fallen to bands like the Kitchener Dutch Boy Drum and Bugle Corps, which still competes internationally and has the laurels to show for it. While the torch has been passed, there are also plenty of alumni from the glory days of that Waterloo Band Festival era who have kept that traâ€" dition alive. Bill Granger, for instance, still remembers playing for Thiele‘s drum and bugle corps in the 1950s. He vividly recalls marching around the confines of the former Seaâ€" gram‘s Stadium in Waterloo playâ€" ing a tune committed to memory WATERLOO CHRONICLE + Wednesday, August 15, 2007 | MreaTS‘& CHEESE ] SPECIALS on now to Aug. 18" Ontario Corn Fed Tâ€"Bone Steaks ... "When we came up with the name for the revived festival we thought the New Waterloo Band Festival was a noâ€"brainer," said Granger. "It takes it right back to its tradiâ€" tional home in the area." Well, the idea took off, And now it‘s in its third year featuring an even greater assemblage of some of the best drum and bugle corps in Ontario. It includes a first appearance of the Dutch Boy Corps at the festival, and the previously mentioned Scout House Band. Waterloo‘s John Hendry plays cymbals for the Scout House Band. It‘s something the local publicâ€" schoolâ€"board trustee has been doing since the 1960s. "You know me, I always like to be noisy," laughed Hendry, who also helped Granger organize this year‘s festival. "But I‘ve been doing this since I was a kid. "But now we have to read music which makes it sort of difficult for me, but Love the uniforms and the pageantry. "And this year is going to be really unique because most of the bands will be putting on a field show."
