This week, the cast and crew of Blyth Festival's second 2007 production, Queen Milli of Gait. joined together for the first time in the Garage rehearsal hall to hear design presentations and a first read-through of the script. Playwright Gary Kirkham described his inspiration for the play as being intrigued by an interview on CBC radio of the notorious Milli- cent Miilroy. Fascinated by someone who would be so bold as to write "wife of Edward VIII" on her tombstone. Kirkham dug a little deeper to discov- er the reality of Millroy's story. While questionable. no one is absolutely sure where the truth ends and the fanta- sy begins. Queen Milli comes to Blyth Kirkham descended upon the Galt archives where the clerk instantly recognized his request by responding "oh, you mean Milli." This clerk had actually had an opportunity to speak with Millicem Millroy prior to her death and Kirkham's thoughts ofMilli instantly produced impressions that triggered the play. And. the story of Fdward vm also fascinated Kirkham, describing him as "on the cutting edge at thartime, hroadiv cultured - a man that could change the world." Award-winning set and lighting designer, Steve Lucas presented a model of his "garden set" last week which he describes as "ide- alized and dream-like, not quite reality - a really lovely memory" Lucas also felt strongly that the Blyth Memorial Community Hall - the vilv lage's cenotaph -- be a visi- ble part of the sec Set in 1919, the Blyth Memorial Community Hall was under construction dur- ing the time of the prince's visit, and its presence adds power and poignancy to scenes. The director, Eric Ooate. felt immediately connected with its notorious characters - Edward vm and "crazy" Milli -- captivated by the quest to find a moment "when something leads one to fall off the rails - the moment that changes one's course of life and embarks them on the road to unhap- piness." Queen Milli of Gait opens July 4 and runs until Aug. ll. Tickets are $18 to $26 per person. and are available by calling the Blyth Festival box office at 519-523-9300 or at I-877-862-5984.
