f'l "the University of Waterâ€" loo‘s school of optomâ€" etry came from modâ€" est beginnings 40 years ago, starting in the old postâ€" office building in uptown Waterloo, to become one of the world‘s leaders in optometry training. And the university took steps to ensure the continâ€" ued success of the program last Friday, holding a groundbreaking ceremony for a new 40,000â€"squareâ€"foot addition to the school. The expanded building will allow the school of optomeâ€" try to train almost double the number of eyeâ€"care proâ€" fessionals, while expanding its research base and capaciâ€" ty to do community outâ€" reach. The total cost of the projâ€" ect is more than $17 million, said Dr. Thomas Freddo, the director of the school, with an ambitious fundraising program already collecting $6.5 million of that total. In addition to the new construction, there will be an extensive renovation project of the original buildâ€" ing, first opened in 1974, to integrate it into the new addition. "That will probably cost up to another $3 million to $4 million," said Freddo, who joined the school from No charge for admission . Donations to Lutherwood Child and Family Foundation accepted .
