That land became Waterâ€" loo‘s West Side Park. Furnished with a large grandstand (built in 1895), a substantial pavilion and a grand ornamental gateway, the park soon became the focus of the whole town‘s leisure and recreational activities. The oval track, its trace still visible today, was the scene of popular motorcycle racing. Chad Beaupre provides his son Jack, 4, with a steady hand before the Manulife Bike and Hike for Heart Sunday at RIM Park. Jack didn‘t need a lot of help as he motored around the parking lot getting ready for the annual fundraiser. Passing out pointers 808 VEBANAC rHOTO A large bandshell, backed against Silver Lake, resounded with a huge annual confluence of bands from across Canada and the U.S. The hosts were, of course, Waterloo‘s own Musical Society Band under its renowned conâ€" ductor C.F Thiele. Waterloo Park also afforded a choral celebration of German heritage with the yearly Saengerfest. And children flocked to swim in Silver Lake! In their enthusiâ€" asm, boys sometimes threw themselves into it in the buff â€" despite the odd local protest. Municipal officials in early Waterloo did a lot to enrich its citizens‘ lives.
