Lake's biggest problems come from stormwater sewers, says city official starting to look, its age. And one of the contro- versial solutions to the sedi- ment and water-quality issues facing Silver lake is to take it off-line. The City of Waterloo is currently reviewing the overall health of Silver Lake. which was originally built as a water source for Abraham Erb's grist mill in the 1800s. deruQ homes both highly susceptible to the troughs and down spouts, ’ - __ _ r . Things like the quality of the sediment in the lake have to be determined before figuring out if dredg- ing is needed and at what cost. And the city staff can't simply rely on the previous recommendations made by the last class environmental assessment. Siva said the lake has been impacted by a number of factors. One of those factors isn't sediment flowing down- stream from Clair lake and the upper reaches of Clair Creek, said Karen Mayer, a special projects manager for the City of Waterloo. There was some sugges- tion by those opposed to the city's plan to take Clair Lake off-line that it would push the problems further The region will monitor the presence of the virus through testing dead birds, particularly crows and blue jays, which are both highly susceptible to the virus. The public is asked to report sightings of all species of dead birds to the West Nile virus hob But Meyer said the impact from Clair lake and Clair Creek is negligible. Sil- ver lake's biggest problems come from the stormwater sewers that flow right into the lake from the older parts of the city, which aren't til- tered out by stormwater ponds featured in newer neighbourhoods in the city. "A lot of it is contributed by local stormwater fallout," said Meyer. "It's local ero- sion and that sort of thing." And because of the difti- culty in upgrading older stormwater systems quanti- ty and quality controls, Sil- ver lake is going to have to be dredged out on a fairly regular basis. "We're going to see how the pipe's functioning, measure the silt depth posi- tion in the lake and do a model on how the lake is circulating," said Mayer. "Then we're going to have to come up with a plan from There are many ways to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds: don't allow outdoor objects to collect water, dispose of discarded tires, clear eaves troughs and down spouts, change the water in bird baths every other day and cover the tops of rain barrels with a fine mesh screen. "Were hoping to get that work done this year." One of thi, solutions could be taking Silver lake off-line. "it will depend on the assessment on how things are working," said Mayer. "lt might mean moving the (stormwater) pipe from where it's currently set. "You also havé to recog- nize may it is an online sys- tem so that it's going to silt up." The city doesn't want it to be a project that has to be reworked every 10 years. The costs start adding up, so city officials are looking for a longer term solution. "Once they've done that assessment on how it's functioning, and the amount of deposition that gathers every year, we'll have to see how that can be managed and maintained in a cost-effective way," said Moyer.
