Even though both were members of the Inter-Men- nonite Children's Choir, nei- ther can recall looking at __ much less talking to - each other. But now - 16 years later - they share more than a common interest in music. They also share a home and three children. "I think there was a photo taken once that showed us both looking at a fake spi- der." Buschen said, reflect- ing on their time with the choir. "But I think that's about the closest we got in those days." That 'was until they met again as students at a Uni- versity of Waterloo fynction. lt had been about 10 years since they would have seen each other, but it seems Buschert never forgets a face. "l went up to him and said, 'I think I know you,'" she said. Vanderkooy's reaction was nothing to write home about. she said. "We were at a bar, so I naturally took it as a pickup line," he said. But the more they spoke. the more Vanderkooy remembered - and the more they discovered they had in common, "My roommate thought he was my type even before we spoke," Buschert said. "He was wearing a Tilley hat with a guitar over his shoul- der. "And I found out he had a canoe, I love canoeing." After hitting it off that first night. Vanderkooy and Buschert started dating almost immediately. The Grand Philharmonic Youth Choir, under the direction of Nancy Tanguay, will present a concert to recognize the 10th anniversary of the Grand Philhar- monic Youth Choir's membership with the Grand Philharmonic family on May 12 at 7:30 pm. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kitchener. The program will include a variety of sacred chamber works from the renaissance to the 20th cen- tury, a performance of The Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, featuring baritone soloist and artist in residence with the GPYC Daniel Lichti, and youth choir member Eric Tanguay. The GPYC will also perform two works in Hebrew. The accompanist for the evening will be Brahm Goldhamer. one of Canada's foremost collaborative artists. and the organist for the concert will be Sean Simpson. The Grand Philharmonic Children's Choir will also be participating. When the program funding ended, the artistic director of the Grand Philharmonic Choir, Howard Dyck, invited the choir to become part of the Grand Philharmonic family. Founded in Zion Uiiited Church. the choir was originally pan of an outrtach. program. From these humble beginnings, the GPYC has excelled, winning first prize in the 2006 CBC Choral Competition for Amateur Choirs. in the mixed voice category. In addition to 2006's first-place finish, the choir was national semifmalists in the Equal Voice Youth Choir category of the 2004 CBC Amateur Choir Com- petition, has received many ftrsts at the Kitchener- Waterloo Kiwanis Music Festival, and has often been selected to enter the Ontario Music Festival Associa- tion provincial finals.
