St. Agnes school celebrates 50th anniversary with weekend of festivities Along the way, Fitzgerald has also carved her own place at the school, starting out as a classroom volunteer, moving on to be an office volunteer, and now serving as chair of the St. Agnes school council. t. Agnes school will always have a special place in Susan Fitzgerald‘s heart. Her two daughters, Melissa and Emily, attended school there in the midâ€" to lateâ€"1980s, and now her son, Michael, will be graduating from its hallowed halls this June. With her son moving on to high school, the personal connection she‘s had to the school for the better part of 20 years will be over. That‘s why Fitzgerald plans to be front and centre this weekend when the small school celebrates its 50th anniversary. She wants to make the most of every occasion at the school while she still "I feel so honoured, it makes me teary," said the Waterloo mother. "It‘s been my pleasure. I‘ve grown so much from the experience, I‘ve learned a lot and I‘ve had the privilege of playâ€" ing a handsâ€"on role in my child‘s eduâ€" cational experience. "I couldn‘t ask for anything more." Fitzgerald described St. Agnes school as the "small school with a big heart." And she‘s not alone in her opinion. Sandra Woodhouse, a Grade 4 teacher at the school, remembers what St. Agnes was like in the lateâ€"1960s â€" when she was a student there. "It was a lot smaller back then," she said. "There were only two wings, and we didn‘t have a playground." Organizers hope for more than 2,000 WCJ alumni Continued from page 12 St. Agnes Catholic Church hadn‘t been built yet either, so the school hosted weekly mass in its gymnasium. After teaching at other regional schools, Woodhouse took the opportuâ€" nity to mave to St. Agnes school nearly 10 years ago. The experience has been nostalgic, she said. "I‘ve actually taught Grade 4 in my old Grade 4 classroom. and I‘m now Then there‘s Leslie Straus, a former viceâ€"president in the school‘s student government in 1962, who found out about the reunion and flew all the way in from her California home to be part of the organizing committee. "We‘re trying to get a hold of all the alumni to at least make them aware of what‘s going an." said Nickel. "We‘d lave for them to come hack for some of it, or all of it." The organizers hope to have more than 2,000 people return for a reunion weekend in the spring of 2010. The next organizing committee meeting is June 3 at 2 pm. at the school us and told us he‘s coming back for the reunion," said Nickel. "We had a whole profile on him in our vear book last vear."
