The Grade 7 student at the Waterloo school can‘t wait to see their reaction after she got 10 inches of her flowing golden locks cut off last Friday at Hairizona salon and beauty spa. While it might be a new look for Nicole, those who know her aren‘t surprised about why she decided to change her look after growâ€" ing her hair long for the past four years. In fact, Nicole has been carefully measuring her hair for a while to make sure it was over the 10â€"inch requirement that the Floriâ€" daâ€"based foundation needs to create a wig for children undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. "It feels good that someâ€" one with cancer is going to get my hair," said Nicole. Mom Rachel Burns said this isn‘t the first time her daughter has done someâ€" thing for others battling il}â€" LIFESTYLE ness. Nicole spent two weeks in hospital in London and Kitchener when she was six years old after she conâ€" tracted a severe case of group A streptococcus. The oldest of three chilâ€" dren, she was swamped with gifts from wellâ€"wishers. But when it was time to go home she insisted her mother leave most of the toys she received for the other kids who weren‘t getting out of hospital. "She always wanted to help other kids," said Rachel. " She got a lot of gifts given to her and she left them all behind because she wanted to share them with the other kids." When her grandmother Harriet Reitzel came down with breast cancer, Nicole organâ€" ized a special neighbourâ€" hood fundraiser with her brother Evan and sister Baylie in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. "They, along with some neighbourhood kids, sold lemonade and made neckâ€" laces and bracelets and sold them on the street and donated the money to the cancer society," said Rachel. "She‘s always looking to help out, especially since my mom is a breast cancer surâ€" vivor."
