I‘ve watched tennis for a long time on the boob tube â€" oops, maybe that‘s «a poor choice of words for this item â€" and I don‘t remember greats Billie Jean King or Rod Laver â€"â€" or even John McEnroe â€"â€" grunting all over the court. ing as they serve and return shots Can‘t wait for the new Rock Continued from page 20 Now, if there is scientific evidence that grunting is actually helping the modernâ€"day players, let me know. 1‘d be glad to hear about it and pass it along. Otherwise, I‘ll mark it down to stupid mind games the competitors are playing on each other. Of course, there was usually someâ€" thing coming out of Mac‘s mouth, but it was usually whining and complainâ€" ing. The Rock, designed by Nick Faldo with a boost from Ontario‘s own fine designer Dave Moote, opened to rave reviews three years ago and was named at the time as the best new course in Canada by U.S. publication Golf Digest. And last but not least, here‘s a big heart honour to the Rock golf club in Muskoka, a magnificent 18â€"hole course carved through the rocks and woods of one of Ontario‘s best summerâ€"resort locations. However, it proved to be a difficult test with crowned fairways, small teeâ€" ing areas, blind shots to greens and so on. It was fine for the low handicapper who could thread his way around the layout, but I‘m sure it was beating up on the high handicapper, like myself, because it was simply too tough. And quite frankly, it‘s the high hand W MEA affers recreational and competitive levels of play. Ironically, when I played the course on the mediaâ€"day opening, I enjoyed a betterâ€"thanâ€"average day of hitting it straight off the tee, and I came away with something in the high 90s, which is good for me from relatively short tees. However, over the course of the next couple of years, 1 heard more and more players complain to me that they would never play it again, calling it too tough, unfair and, in some instances, just stupid. Well, somebody at the Rock must have been listening because it was recently announced that the course will be closed in 2007 to make extenâ€" sive renovations with what I am sure is a goal of making it more playable. Congrats to the ownership group headed by Ken Fowler, who realized that tough isn‘t really necessary for today‘s golf crowd, especially as the boomer generation plays more and more along with us preâ€"boomers. The system is simple enough. Have a back set of tees at 7,000 yards for the really skilled players, but plenty of upâ€" front shorter tees for the majority of us who are lucky if we break 100. Hey, this isn‘t brain surgery. I wouldâ€" n‘t keep going back to a course where I was paying big bucks and shooting triple digits all the time.
