I Vikings‘ big men make them a threat r I Tthe last time the WCI Vikings boasted a front court with two players more than sixâ€"footâ€"six in height they were talking about Jaan Montgomery and Gavin Horne and celebrating the school‘s last WCSSAA senior boys basketball chamâ€" pionship. So why should it be any different with Matt Buckley and Payton Hollis now clogâ€" ging up the lane for the Vikings two years later? There are other more fashionable picks to win this year‘s WCSSAA title, including Waterloo‘s Sir John A. Macâ€" donald Highlanders and Cambridge‘s Southwood Sabres. But both those schools boast only one legitimate big man apiece, although Southâ€" wood‘s Zach Natzgaam is the biggest of them all at sixâ€"footâ€" 11. But two big men might be better than one, and that‘s why the Vikings are a dark horse in the run for a title. To get there the Vikings still have a little more work to do as the core of the team is still getting over an extended run at the OFSAA volleyball championships, where WCI finished fourth after bringing home silver a year ago. Buckâ€" ley and Hollis were a big part of that CWOSSAâ€"winning club, and are still looking to get into game shape after using a different skill set on the volleyball court. The bad news is that it‘s caught up to them on the court with all the running they have to do in game situâ€" ations. "Most teams have been at this for four weeks and this is only our second game," said Hollis. "We have to catch up in a short period of time." But once they get their game legs back, the fifthâ€"year duo, who have been playing off each other since they first came to WCI in 2001, will be "A couple of times I think I tried to spike the balls," laughed Buckley. Bluevale‘s Mike Mallon drives by WCI‘s Payton Hollis in last week‘s 41â€"33 win by the Vikings. a formidable obstacle for any wouldâ€"be champion. They flashed some of that potenâ€" tial in the Vikings 41â€"33 win over crosstown rivals Blueâ€" vale last Thursday in WCI‘s home gym. The duo played a little high/low game with the Knights with Hollis feeding Buckley in the post for 10 firstâ€"half points. When the Knights made the adjustâ€" ment and packed it in on Buckley, Hollis joined him down low to add a game high 14 points for the Vikings. "We‘ve been playing together for five years now," said Hollis, about the familâ€" iarity they have with each other‘s game. "And since we‘re both big we know how to get the ball into each other." That was a similar formuâ€" That was a similar formuâ€" la that the Vikings had in place last year with both Buckley and Hollis in the front court. But they‘ve had better success with it this year because of the Vikings‘ guard play that has stretched guard play that has stretched opposing defences this year, and given the WCI big men more room to maneuver under the basket. "I don‘t think there‘s a team in WCSSAA as tall as us, so that gives us the advanâ€" tage," said Hollis. "And it helps that we defend each other in practice." While the offensive game is coming, it‘s on defensive they can be a real force in changing shots and closing down the lane to the basket. So how do they describe each other‘s games? "He‘s good at finishing off around the basket," said Buckley about Hollis. "He‘s got good intensity on defence, and he‘s a good rebounder." "He‘s got a good knowlâ€" edge of the game," said Hollis about Buckley. "He knows what to do with the ball." So what are their expectaâ€" tions? "We‘re going to have some tough games," said Buckley, Continued on page 27 $5.99/ Ib $11.00 ea $21.00 ea $13.99/ lb $3.29/ Ib. $3.39/ Ib. $3.39/ Ib. $3.99/ Ib
