Some shout Quebec must separate, some that a red Ontario is the only way to ensure a rich dominion, while half the land mass holds a jaundiced view of Ottawa. No wonder half flee. not knowing which way to turn or not caring at all, while the rest hang on Our prime minister, Paul Martin, had his chance recently when his director of communications, Scott Reid. claimed the extra child care cash proposed by Harper would go for booze and popcorn. Martin, who may have given Reid a secret pat on the backâ€" which would be consisâ€" tent with our view of politicians â€" distanced himself explaining he did â€" n‘t share his staff member‘s stance. This may be another example of sacâ€" rificing truth on the altar of the politâ€" Angela Merkel that her government had made a mistake in the case of a German national who claims he was wrongfully imprisoned. It will hurt Bush in the short run, but who. American or Canadian. doesn‘t appreciate being told the truth? Of course setting goals isn‘t quite enough since you also have to plan how to achieve them. Keeping with this theme I thought I would take the liberty and establish a few goals and objectives for some of our politicians. Gilles Duceppe‘s goal is to take all 75 seats in Quebec. His method to achieve this objective is the easiest of all the leaders/ he must simply remind Quebecers of the Liberal scandal at every turn. If he achieves his goal he can then turn the Bloc‘s newfound energy towards the next Quebec provincial election in 2007 and oust the provincial Liberals and Premiet Jean Charest, thus setting the stage for another referendurm, constiâ€" tutional crisis and possible recession. You‘ve got to Jove this guy and his separatist colleagues!? _ Stephen Harper‘s goal is also to form the government Jan. 23 and find himself a new job as our prime minisâ€" ter. His method to achieve this objecâ€" tive includes bedazzling the public with his policy initiatives before the Liberals try to make him look to scary to trust. He must appear "friendly" at all times and keep his cool during all public appearances. If he achieves his objective he must arrange a formalâ€" ized agreement with the NDP ASAP and adroitly work closely with the Bloc Quebecoisâ€"butâ€"not too closely. If he gets too cozy with the Bloc he will be looking for another job in a year or NDP leader Jack Layton Jack Layton‘s goal is to maintain the balance of power in another minority government Jan. 23. To accomplish this he must campaign hard in ridings he has a reasonable chance of itoba. He must appear smart, urban, but not to smart and urban. Otherwise he may turn some smart urban people back cowards the Liberals. If he is successful he must work like heck to achieve electoral reform, i.e. proportional representation, for the next federal election. Otherwise his party‘s relevance on the national stage will continue to diminish. Locally if current MPs Andrew Telegdi, Karen Redman and Lynn Myers run solid, conventional and unsurprising cam â€" Janko Peric needs to do the same. If he encourages the votes he lost to the NDP the last time to come back into the Liberal fold, he will be returned to Otawa in a squeaker. There is of course another election this year, and I would be ‘ surprised if any of our current municipal officials decide not t nun. Warch for all three current mayors of Waterloo, Cambridgg and Kitchener, and the regional chairman to shortly annour their candidacies for reâ€"election i To achieve their objective of being reâ€"elected, watch for all councils to avoid controversial decisions in 2006. If faced with a tough decision that may upset a few voters, it will stagid a good chance of being deferred to 2007 karly in Lllz ‘the respective councils will yore on .gmf (mnremmwn tuf the nex terim; don‘t expect o much more to happen dl* that Wdl. another Christmas season has come and gone and it is uime to get back to work and focus on 2006. I know it may sound kind of militaristic but I figure that 1 spend time planning and setting objectives for my professional life,. why not for my personal life? Paul Martin‘s goal is to form the government Jan. 23 and keep his job as Canada‘s primé minister. To achieve this goal he must focus on his government‘s economic record and try to make the other guys look too scary to trust. While doing this, he has to appear statesmanâ€"like and in control at all times. If the objective is met, his next goal will be to arrange a formalâ€" ized agreement with the NDP ASAP Otherwise we will be going to the polls again in another year. * winning in British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and.Man T;.u your questions/comments to uuwuu*uu'i Myers run solid, conventional and unsurprising cam â€" , they will be returned to office.
