However. Fitzpatrick said that despite the many tiUC- cesses they have had. and despite all the many work- places who have worked hard to exceed their own goals this year, they have managed to come across some unexpected chal- lenges which he said they failed to factor in when mak- ing up their goal amount. He attributes a lot of their downfall in this year's cam- paign to the decline that is currently taking place in dif- ferent sectors of the com- munity. "You look at some of the sectors that are challenged. and right now the manufac- luring sector is a huge chal- lenge." said Fitzpatrick. "I don't want to single any businesses out, but for example when La-Z-Boy closed their doors. that's one more campaign you lose. "Those aruas where we are coming up short tare areas where) we've not been able to Overcome," he added. "People giving at the leadership level formed 25 per cent of our overall cam- paign." Fitzpatrick said, "so it looks like we're going to be using up all of that $100000 (by matching donations from others)." Organizers plan to keep counting their pennies right until the end hcfure they disclose the final campaign m 0 re. I.. every dollar we get in the door is a dollar closer to reaching our goal. "lhere's about 30 or 40 (campaigns still running who haven't reported their totals}. which is not had when you think about how we have 340 campaigns out there," Fitzpatrick rational- ized. "But every dollar we can get in the door is a dollar closer to reaching our goal." The annual touchdown breakfast brings a close to the campaign this Friday at the Waterloo Inn and Con- ference Centre, 475 King St. N.. in Waterloo. The break- fast, which has a couple hundred guests registered to attend, will include an awards ceremony and will showcase important stories within the community. "ll looks like we might be falling short (of our goal), but there's still a lot we'll be celebrating because we will be exceeding our amount from last year," Fitzpatrick said. "We have a very strong community that is solidly behind the United Way so the key to our current Hun“ C955 is by getting people involved. If we can do that then the successes will con- tinue to he realized." NO TAXI
