Mitchell believes one reason why women don‘t run in municipal elections is because they feel they can make a difference just by volunteering, or they wait to be asked to run. "Women obviously can make a difference by volunâ€" teering, but when they volâ€" unteer their voice isn‘t heard," Mitchell says. "And women generally wait to be asked to run, whereas men are more likely to step forâ€" ward and run on their own." Mitchell believes it is important for women to run because they bring a differâ€" ence voice to the table, "Women‘s life experiâ€" ences are different than men‘s; they bring different experiences to the table. We need that representation." Mitchell, who became interested in politics after serving as a trustee on the Waterloo Region District school board from 1999â€" 2000, hopes to see 100 women at the event, but says that only 40 have regisâ€" tered so far. This is the first time an event like this has been held in Waterloo, and three years ago a similar and successful event for women interested in politics was held in Brantâ€" ford. "This is an official ‘ask‘ to the women of the Waterloo Region and area." says The walking school bus at Westâ€" vale public school has become a model for elementary schools across the region in the fight to cut down on car traffic and encourage active alternatives for getting to school.Launched last spring in conjunction with the Region of Waterloo‘s Walk to School Day, Westvale‘s Trailblazâ€" ers program uses about 40 Grade 6 volunteers to escort younger students on prescribed walking routes throughout the subdiviâ€" sion.
