I Waterloo resident Iarhec Clifton felt a desire to do something tan- gible to assist the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Responding to a request from her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Marhee and her family donated and assembled five family hygiene kits consisting of toothbrushes. toothpaste. soap, hand towels and combs in waterproof sand- wich bags. Still motivated to do something more, Clifton enlisted the aid of a local school council and her neighbours to help increase the number of kits to be donated. Already involved in at least three'other charitable activities this year, the school council of Northlake Woods public school in Waterloo responded posi- tively to Clifton's appeal. readily donating $450 to help purchase supplies for the kits. In one evening, a "um- ber of her neighbours from the Northlake Woods school community. and one stu- dent's local synchronized swimming team, gathered together in her basement to assemble the kits and enjoy snacks of pop, chips, pie and ice cream that Clifton provided. Their 72 hygiene kits, plus many more that other local members of the LDS Church have prepared, are being delivered to victims of the hurricanes through the church's welfare services and humanitarian aid orga- nization. She is more confi- dent, Clifton says, sending goods for the victims through the church, since she knows that they will be delivered directly to the people in need. The LDS Church was one of the first agencies to deliv- er aid to the affected areas, sending in more than 140 truckloads of commodities and emergency supplies including food. clean water, generators, sleeping bags and tools to help rebuild people's homes.
